The South Carolina General Assembly elected a 25-year education veteran to the South Carolina State University Board of Trustees. Dr. Carlotta Redish, assistant superintendent for Personnel and Student Services for Spartanburg School District Seven in Spartanburg, S.C., joined the board on Feb. 5. Redish holds the 5th district seat.
“I consider it to be an honor to serve on the board of trustees for South Carolina State University because of its rich history. “Doctors, lawyers, engineers, architects, great teachers, civic leaders and Supreme Court justices have graduated from South Carolina State University,” said Redish.
“It is a stellar university, and I believe that SC State University has the potential to be the best institution of higher learning in the state of South Carolina,” she continued.
In her current role, Redish develops management objectives and engages in long-range planning in the areas of personnel and student services for the school district, which has more than 7,200 students.
Prior to serving in the Spartanburg School District, she was employed as the associate superintendent for Instructional and Administrative Services in the Cherokee County School District. There she developed instructional programs and intervention programs for more than 9,142 students.
Redish, who lives by the education philosophy, “children first,” has experience in k-12, secondary education and higher education, which Board Chairman Dr. William Small believes will be beneficial to the board and for the university.
“We are pleased to have Dr. Carlotta Redish as a member of the board of trustees. She brings a vast amount of educational experience to the board. Her experience, coupled with the particular skills set of each board member, will prove useful as we continue to build a stronger and increasingly relevant South Carolina State University,” said Small.
Redish received a Bachelor of Arts in political science and Master of Education in secondary education from the University of South Carolina. She later received an educational specialist degree in educational administration and instructional supervision from Jacksonville State University. In 2010, she received a Doctor of Philosophy in child development-12 (educational leadership and policy) from the University of South Carolina.
She is a member of several affiliations throughout the state of South Carolina: the South Carolina Association of School Administrators, the South Carolina Personnel Roundtable, Spartanburg Downtown Rotary Club, the South Carolina Alliance of Black School Educators and the South Carolina Reading Alliance. Redish previously served as a Content Fellow for the University of Pittsburgh Learning Research Development Center. She is a member of the Links, Inc. and Jack and Jill of America.
